Poker machines

A poker machine (also known as gaming machine) is any device, whether:

  • wholly mechanical
  • partly mechanical, or
  • electronically operated,

that is designed for the following reasons:

a) It can be used to play a game of chance, or a game of mixed chance and skill

b) As a result of making a bet on the machine, winnings may become payable.

This includes any machine declared a gaming machine under section 3.1.3 of the Gambling Regulation Act 2003 (the Act).

Gaming and monitoring are lawful when:

  • gaming is conducted, and
  • when gaming equipment is provided (in an approved venue or casino) in line with the Act.

Poker machine area size, layout and facilities

Gaming can only occur within an approved Gaming Machine Area (GMA). This area must meet strict requirements, including being indoors, physically discrete, and ensuring patron safety. Venue operators must comply with regulations on lighting, layout, and cabling. Gaming machines must be securely positioned and identified with a unique ID number.

Modifications to poker machine areas

Venue operators must get approval before modifying a gaming machine area (GMA), except for low-risk changes like moving machines or adding a privacy screen.
