What is self-exclusion and why is it important?
Excluding yourself from gambling is a powerful tool to help you manage your gambling. It allows you to block yourself from gaming venues or online gambling services. This can help you:
- take a break or permanently exclude yourself from gambling
- reduce the impact gambling may be having on your life
- remove temptation by restricting access to gambling
- support your decision to change gambling habits.
How does self-exclusion work?
Gambling venues and online betting services in Victoria must provide self-exclusion programs. This means they must provide a clear process for customers to voluntarily exclude themselves. They are also required to enforce the exclusion if needed.
Self-excluding from a venue
- You choose the venues to be excluded from.
- You sign an agreement listing the venues you agree to not go into for a minimum period.
- If staff see you in a poker machine room that you asked to be excluded from, they will ask you to leave and report you to the self-exclusion program.
- At the end of the exclusion period, you can extend it.
Self-excluding from online betting
- You choose the online gambling providers to be excluded from.
- You can also use BetStop to exclude yourself from all online betting services.
- Once you register, providers will not let you place a bet or open a new account.
- You will also no longer receive marketing messages from the betting provider.
