Mandatory closure periods – opting into machine disablement with IGS

Mandatory closure periods for gaming machine areas in Victorian hotels and clubs come into effect on 30 August 2024. This means electronic gaming machines (EGMs) must not be played between 4 am and 10 am daily.

To support compliance, venue operators can opt-in to have Intralot Gaming Services (IGS) automatically disable/enable their EGMs to align with the new mandatory closure period or any other hours a venue nominates.

A venue operator can choose not to opt-in to this function and leave EGMs enabled during the mandatory closure period. However, it is a venue operator’s responsibility to ensure no machine can be played during these hours, or outside of a venue’s permitted hours.

We strongly recommend that venues not already using the IGS automatic disabling/enabling function should consider signing up and nominating hours in accordance with the existing process.

The VGCCC will monitor EGM activity to detect any game play during the mandatory closure period. A zero-tolerance approach will be applied to any non-compliance where a venue operator has not opted-in to the automatic disabling/enabling function.

The following FAQ’s provide further information about these changes.

What do I need to do before 30 August 2024?

If your venue’s operating hours are changing to comply with the mandatory closure period, you must change your nominated gaming hours in the IGS BOS portal before 30 August 2024.

You will also need to contact IGS if you:

  • need to update existing times that IGS currently disables/enables EGMs at your venue

  • wish to opt-in to the automatic disabling/enabling function.

What if I choose not to opt-in to have IGS disable and enable my EGMs in line with the mandatory closure period?

You will need to have appropriate processes and controls in place to ensure no EGM is operating during the mandatory shutdown period.
