‘Chances are you’re about to lose’: New gambling advertising taglines

From 30 March 2023, wagering service providers who provide interactive wagering and betting services, such as online or telephone betting will be required to use specific taglines and calls to action in their advertising.

The new taglines are:

  • Chances are you’re about to lose.
  • Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
  • What’s gambling really costing you?
  • What are you prepared to lose today? Set a deposit limit.
  • Imagine what you could be buying instead.
  • You win some. You lose more.
  • What are you really gambling with?

The standard call to action message is “For free and confidential support call 1800 858 858 or visit gamblinghelponline.org.au”.

There are specific requirements for using and displaying different taglines and call to action messages when advertising on television, radio, social media, websites, internet applications, print and direct marketing. The requirements differ depending on which platform is used to advertise gambling.

Wagering service providers must also keep a copy of any gambling advertising (in print or electronic form) for a period of 12 months following the end of any advertising campaign so it is available for inspection.

More information

Specific requirements are set out in the March 2023 harm minimisation Ministerial Direction.

This Ministerial Direction implements in Victoria, the specific measure in the National Consumer Protection Framework for Online Wagering, that provides nationally consistent messaging about the risks and potential harms arising from interactive wagering.

Australian Government resources are also available to help wagering service providers comply with the new requirements.

Reminder: Train your staff by 31 March 2023

Wagering service providers who provide online or telephone betting services are also reminded that all relevant people (including employees, contractors and directors involved in providing betting services or involved in decisions that affect the provision of betting services) must complete the initial responsible service of wagering training course by 31 March 2023.

Any new relevant people (who started employment after 28 February 2023) must complete this training within one month after commencing employment.

An annual refresher training course must then be completed within 12 months of the initial training course.

More information

These training requirements and more – such as requirements about inducements, direct marketing, deposit limits, account closure, activity statements and betting account records - are detailed in the July 2022 Ministerial Direction (PDF, 463.54 KB).
